Monday Tip: Spill the Beans
Monday Tip: Spill the Beans
Raise your hand if you’re keeping a secret from your partner, your family, your friends, dating prospects, etc. Maybe you don’t consider it a secret—you’re just leaving bits out or cherry-picking what you share. Everyone does that, right? It can be as “innocuous” as hiding shopping receipts or as big as not telling your partner you have a kid.
Secrets, in all forms, stem from a fear of someone judging you, shaming you, leaving you, or even ostrasizing you. Maybe they’ll find out you’re not the person they thought you were. If you keep your secret under wraps, you think you can preserve the relationship, but it actually degrades your relationship. How open can you be with someone if you’re hiding something?
TIP: If you’re withholding information from someone in your life, ask yourself what you’re afraid of. Is that possible outcome (which you don’t actually know will happen) worse than the heaviness of harboring a secret? Sharing secrets takes courage, absolutely, but it can result in amazing freedom. So go ahead, spill the beans. Be unapologetically you.
